Walter Serner

“The world becomes smaller and smaller. Keep that in mind. Otherwise it might happen that you consider yourself far out of the fireline whereas in fact you stand right in front of the gunbarrel.” (Walter Serner, 1917)

Walter Serner was one of the founders and leading heads of the DADA-movement in Zurich. All quotes are taken from his “Last Loosening” Manifesto of 1917, which has been plagiated by Tristan Tzara so successfully in his French Manifesto Dada from 1918 that until today he is considered as founder and theorist of dadaism. As a consequence Serner separated himself from the dada movement and lead an unsteady life in various locations throughout Europe. Finally he returned to his hometown Carlsbad and took up work as a teacher. In 1933 his books were censored and banned. His trace is lost in the concentration camp Theresienstadt.

After Thomas Milch †, Serner’s editor and former director of the Walter-Serner-Archives.
